In my last blog post, I explained how my dream to own a Porsche and passion for cars first started. To begin I wasn't always a Porsche fan and I certainly haven't considered purchasing a car like the Cayman until very recently.
I always knew I wanted to get behind the wheel of a fast car. To set the scene, my daily driver is a 2016 Lexus IS 350 AWD kitted with the F-Sport luxury package. It sits in my parkade most days as I work from home. When I do take it on the road, the 3.5L V6 engine delivers 306 hp - which does a really good job in taking me from point A to point B.
On paper, the Lexus IS350 doesn't seem like much when compared to the iconic members of the Porsche lineup. The Porsche 911 is the typical car you'd think of when someone mentions the Porsche brand. Now when we compare it to the Cayman S... I personally think this is worth the upgrade to spice up my A to B commute.
So why is my goal to buy a 2018 Porsche Cayman S?
Daily driving a Cayman can be relaxing and meditative
Imagine daily driving a Cayman S. Yes, the car has a turbocharged 2.5 litre flat-four engine. Yes, it does produce 350 hp and 309 lb-ft of torque. Yes, a car like this would (respectfully) pull you into your seat when you hit the gas. The 2018 Caymans S can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just a small fraction over 4 seconds. For my metric system buddies, that's 0 - 97 km/h in 4 seconds. Most highways in Vancouver have a speed limit of 100km/h.
Looking back at my Lexus IS350 F-Sport: it takes over 6 seconds to get to 60mph. Although the IS350 is a fast car, it isn't exactly quick. This may not sound like the most relaxing drive, and I'm not asking the car to put me to sleep. However, the daily experience of driving a fast car like the Cayman S is in my humble opinion worth making the dream happen.
It's a realistic goal to work towards
I love the Cayman S and I wholeheartedly think this car will be sitting in my garage one day. I've scoured the web and watched endless videos about it. You can't buy happiness, and your work and career goals can't be focused on purchasing a car either. But having a goal and target to aim for keeps me sharp and driven to succeed.
The reason I purchased the IS350 was that I was looking for a reliable luxury vehicle with an affordable purchase tag and maintenance costs. In my pursuit of the IS350, I put in hours into my craft and put a concentrated effort in making additional income to make it happen. I think aiming for a Cayman S will help me not only succeed, but continue to strive for pursuing excellence.
I made a goal and kept it SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound). As of today, finding a used 2018 Cayman S in great condition and low mileage goes for $75,000 CAD or less. The purchase price of a Cayman S is a realistic goal to work towards without breaking the bank and putting a halt on other life plans.
It'll also feel pretty good driving a fast car without needing to spend money that amounts to a supercar.
I want to be a part of the Porsche community
Porsche enthusiasts, clubs, and owners come from different walks of life. You have people who appreciate the beauty and engineering behind a Porsche. From the Porsche drivers I’ve met and talked with over the years, I found they are chill but passionate about the brand. They are unpretentious and open to educating others.
I once worked with a CTO who owned a grey Porsche 911, and he loved that car to bits. But he was never 'that guy with a nice car'. In fact, nobody knew he had a Porsche until his wife brought it up at a company party. He took time out of his day to speak with others, and he was one of the few people to encourage my journey towards Porsche ownership. He was smart, listened well, took care of his family, and looked for excellence in everything he did.
I don't think every Porsche community member is like this, or should be like this. But he was a standout from the Porsche owners I've met. Not to make this blog contradictory... but I also plan on living a fulfilling life. I want to spend time with friends. Run a business. Be great at what I do. And if financial success follows, I'll enjoy a Porsche!
For the Porsche dreamers out there, why do you want to own a Porsche one day?
